Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder in the United States, affecting over 32.5 million adults, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Osteoarthritis generally causes stiffness and pain in joints in the hands, knees, and hips and is considered to be the version of arthritis caused by wear and tear of the body as you age.

Exercise (leading to weight loss) and medication are two ways to manage this condition, but there are also benefits from foods that we eat. Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five foods that can help manage osteoarthritis pain.

  1. Salmon

Salmon and other oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation in the body and lead to less joint stiffness and pain. Having two servings of fish per week can also benefit heart health.

  1. Olive Oil

Oils like extra-virgin olive oil has other healthy fats that, like salmon, reduce inflammation in the body. In addition, there is research that suggests EVOO can keep from cartilage around the joints from deteriorating as quickly.

  1. Cherries

Dark red cherries, along with blueberries and raspberries, contain antioxidants that also can help reduce inflammation by decreasing the level of a protein in the body called C-reactive, which is associated with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  1. Garlic

Garlic is known for its heart-healthy properties, but for osteoarthritis sufferers, eating any food in the allium family (garlic, leeks, shallots, and onions) can especially reduce cartilage deterioration in the hips.

  1. Spinach and Kale

These are two of the most potent sources of vitamin K, which studies have shown to be important for cartilage health. It helps strengthen bones as well, but it also helps blood clot, so if you’re on blood thinners, check with your doctor before rapidly increasing your vitamin K intake because it could counteract the effect of the medication.
