While it can cause a host of other health problems, one of the biggest issues surrounding COVID-19 is oxygen saturation, which can lead to lung issues. This has led experts to conclude that the better shape your lungs are in, the better your chances will be to avoid severe complications if you do contract the novel coronavirus.

With lung health in mind, Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has three ways to improve your lung health.

  • Gradually Bring Up Your Breathing Levels

Lung function decreases as we age, and the muscles that help us do so also become weaker. But the good news is that exercise can help stave off those negative effects of aging. Another positive of exercise that gets you breathing heavy is that it helps you clear out secretions or pollutants deep in your lungs that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get out if you’re sedentary.

  • Breathing Exercises

For those who might not be able to do a lot of exercise due to mobility issues, deep breathing exercises while being stationary can help. For those who are already getting physical exercise, deep breathing exercises can help lower heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety levels. Here’s an easy one to learn: take in a deep breath through your nose, hold your breath for three seconds, then exhale slowly through the mouth. Repeat that several times and then you should be able to make a productive cough that can get those nasty particles out of your lungs.

  • Keep the Air in Your Home Clean

Regularly change the air filters in your home, especially if you’re running an air conditioner often. Allergens from the outdoors, pets, and other contaminants can more easily come through a dirty air filter, causing increased mucus levels and irritation.
